Quote:No such thing...it might be a bit dead, but you can't tell me that sanding with 600 or even 400 would not take it out. I can understand you needing to fix a couple of dents, but to prime the whole thing is just a waste of product and just adds to the build of material at the break....tape line. To each his own, but just wondering if there was an actual reason.

Well...... I don't know what to tell ya. Here are a couple of pics of what two areas of the roof looked like before I started sanding them. I think I would have to have the Biceps of "Arnold" and about two weeks worth of free time to be able to wet sand it with 400-600 grit and have those two radically different surfaces come out evenly smooth. I stripped the old cleartcoat off with my DA using 180 Grit. Then went over the whole thing again with 320 on the DA. I shot the whole thing with primer so I could see it with one uniform color and to make sure I hadn't missed anything. I then wet sanded the primer. The primer coat isn't thick at all. Like you said, to each his own. I don't claim to be a professional bodyman/ painter. I'm just a hobbyist that likes doing this stuff from time to time and I've actually turned out some very nice custom paint jobs on motorcycles and cars, inspite of having a shoestring budget and primitive facilities to work in. I laid a similar satin black paint job on my car hauler a few years ago , prepping it the same way, and it turned out great. If I run into a problem on this one, I'll just fix it. No biggie. Smile

LOL. Patience Grasshopper. I can only do minor stuff on the weekends when everyone else is around. Hopefully I can shoot the top of the car on monday or tuesday, weather permitting.

I am sorry if I came off as an asshole. I used to own a body shop and I have always been a stickler for product waste. The thing I was trying to say was, there is no need to prime the whole area, You can paint right over the top of a sanded panel, even if you sand with a DA, as long as you use 400 or finer. You will not see the sand marks and you save a step and $ on material. But if you didn't have the time to get it done in one day, or like you said just wanted to see the results of the 2 tone, I understand. I apologize once again, old habits die hard.
If you're gonna build it, make it fast!

No problem man. Smile I don't think you're being an asshole. I know from your posts over the years that you're a body/paint guy. Believe me, I wish I had the facilities to be able to do things more "by the book" . It would be great to have a roomy, secure work area where I could work on the paint project from beginning to end. Each time I do painting I wonder why I even bother trying under these conditions. I live in a subdivision and my house only has a one car attached garage. That one car garage is too small to paint a mark VII in and even if it were big enough, I couldn't use it due to paint fumes getting in the house and overspray coming out of the open garage door where neighbors could see it. (That could be a problem) . But I have a large back yard that has 3 tent garages from pep boys. So I have to do my painting back there. The tent garages keep debris from dropping straight down on what I'm working on but they are open in the front, so debris can blow in, given the chance. In addition to that, with the tent garages being open, any stray cat in the neighborhod can jump up on what I've been working on at any given time, so I can't leave any work unfinished. The fact that I don't have a secure garage to keep this car in is the reason why I'm not going all out to do a real "show" type finish on this car. It's kind of hard to clearly explain what it's like trying to paint under these conditions, but you can see it's pretty much a royal pain in the ass, which is why I don't do it that often. I'm able to do nice motorcycle paint jobs because the parts are so much smaller and easier to work with than trying to do a car under these circumstances. So I just do what I can with what I have to work with.

Looking good Roy, I need to stop by now that you got it legal for that "promised" test drive.
